The International History Bee and Bowl are two history quiz competitions (the Bee is for individual students, the Bowl is for teams) with a focus on all aspects of world history. The International History Bee and Bowl were founded in 2010 in the USA and are organized by International Academic Competitions. IHBB has since grown to include tournaments in over thirty countries around the world, with separate divisions for the USA, Canada, Asia, Europe and Australia and New Zealand. IHBB’s African Division debuted in 2020 with a tournament in Nairobi; in 2021 further tournament sites will be added throughout Africa. It is anticipated that by 2022 an African Championships will debut as well.

In 2020, we will offer four separate age divisions: Varsity is for students born before September 1, 2003; Junior Varsity is for students born between September 1, 2004 and August 31, 2006; Middle School is for students born between September 1, 2006 and August 31, 2008; Elementary is for students born on or after September 1, 2008.

Students who finish in the top 50% at the regional tournaments also qualify for the biennial International History Olympiad, a weeklong celebration of history that brings together the top history students from around the world for numerous competitions, sightseeing opportunities and intercultural events. At IHBB tournaments, students also have the opportunity to take the World Championships Qualifying Exam for the International Geography Bee as well. A sample Exam and its answer key from 2017-2018 are provided below. The IGB World Championships are also held every two years with various geography-themed competitions and events.

Costs

For in-person tournaments in 2021, costs are as follows for a team of up to 6 players. This includes the history Bee for all students taking part in that.
Ghana: 900 GHS
South Africa: 3000 ZAR
Kenya: 20,000 KES
The International Geography Bee Exam, which is given at lunch, costs the following per student:
Ghana: 30 GHS
South Africa 100 ZAR
Kenya: 500 KES

Note 1: For all events, if a wire transfer is being made, it must be paid in US dollars. These teams cost $200 USD. Instructions on paying by wire transfer will be sent together with the invoice upon registration.

Teams paying by cash on the tournament day may of course pay in local currencies (though US Dollar equivalent is fine).  We don’t accept checks anymore, unless they are made out in US dollars, because our bank has raised the international check processing fee.

Note 2: Please note that History Bowl teams of 2 students cost 2/3 of the price listed here, and “teams” of 1 student cost 1/3 of the prices listed here. Such teams must be registered as such; the discount otherwise does not apply. Schools interested in requesting such discounted entry fees must email emilio@iacompetitions.com to request the discount.

Note 3: For single students, it is possible to compete in the Bee only. Please contact emilio@iacompetitions.com for information on pricing.

Note 4: No one is ever turned away for lack of payment, but if full payment, including wire fees if applicable, is not received within 2 weeks of the tournament date, an additional fee of 20% of the fees due will apply.

Note 5: If you wish to pay for a tournament in a currency other than the one listed, that is allowed, but please contact emilio@iacompetitions.com to find out the equivalent price.
